The Euro 2012 Football Championships, which are due to start next month in Ukraine and Poland, are an exception to the general rule that major sporting tournaments do not tend to have a significant impact on economic growth in the host countries. However, the bulk of the boost to growth in both countries has already passed – and the remaining upside from higher tourist revenues will be more than outweighed by potential downsides from the deepening crisis in the euro-zone.
