Election worries in Indonesia, delays in Thailand

The strong showing of opposition parties in local elections held across Indonesia on Wednesday is bad news for President Joko Widodo. They could prompt a shift in policymaking towards more populist measures as the president attempts to shore up support ahead of next year’s general election. Meanwhile, the military government in Thailand has pushed back the date of the country’s next election, with the poll now unlikely to take place until May. There is a growing risk of a popular backlash if the military attempts to retain power indefinitely.
