Thailand’s rice subsidy sustainable

Thailand’s government can afford to maintain its rice subsidy scheme indefinitely, as long as GDP growth holds up and rice prices do not collapse. However, doing so would put at risk the goal of balancing the budget by 2017 and limit room for spending in areas that would do more in the long run for the economy and for welfare.
