Philippines inching closer to a first policy rate hike

The Philippine central bank (BSP) left its key policy rate unchanged at today’s meeting, as expected, but continued to unwind some of the other support measures which are no longer needed. Politics complicates when the key overnight rate is moved up from 4.00%. We forecast that the first hike will come in early June, once May’s presidential and congressional elections are out of the way.
