Sluggish retail sales have prompted media reports that Australia’s shoppers have gone on strike. However, overall consumer spending has held up much better. The upshot is that we do not expect the Reserve Bank to be unduly concerned. We still forecast that the cash rate will be raised by end-2011, although the risk to our view has increased in light of growing worries for the global economy.
