Upcoming state elections could help determine the pace of economic reform in India over the comingyears. A win for the BJP in Haryana could provide reassurance for state assemblies elsewhere thatcontentious reforms need not be electorally unpopular. What’s more, a win there and, in particular, inMaharashtra would put the BJP on course to secure a majority in the Rajya Sabha by 2021, which wouldremove a block to some national-level reforms.
