At least half a dozen explanations have been advanced for the recent jump in the price of Brent crude oil, whether in absolute terms or relative to the traditional US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI). We would give most weight to the current optimism about the global economic outlook, but this support for Brent, like the others, is still likely to drop away by the middle of the year.
