China’s unofficial manufacturing PMI for November fell back markedly, to well below 50, raising fears of a hard landing in the largest commodity consumer. We still believe that a hard landing in China is unlikely, given the potential for policy loosening. But even with this loosening, Chinese commodity demand is set to be less than stellar and, with problems mounting elsewhere, commodity prices have much further to fall.
