What is behind China's rate hike?

With its surprise decision to raise benchmark interest rates, the People’s Bank of China is giving a strong signal to banks to rein in lending after the surge of the last few weeks. The immediate, direct impact on the economy will be minimal, but one longer-term effect will be to raise the income of savers. This could be a small, positive step in China’s efforts to rebalance.
