The value of China’s foreign exchange reserves fell by 10% in 2016 as the People’s Bank fought to prevent a disorderly decline in the renminbi. With the level of reserves still well above most estimates of what the PBOC needs to keep control of the currency, it can continue in this way for some time. Three trillion dollars is still a lot of money.
