Optimism on China’s current account is premature

Given China’s failure to rein in investment-led growth, its current account surplus is likely to rebound both in dollar terms a year or two from now and relative to its own GDP too. Relative to world output, China’s surplus and the resulting drag on demand elsewhere is set to be one of the largest on record.
