Canada's growing current account deficit probably hit a record high in the first quarter, as the impact of the recent slump in oil prices hit export revenues. The lower Canadian dollar will help to narrow the deficit eventually but, in the near-term, the J-curve effect means that the currency-related surge in import prices could actually worsen the trade imbalance.
