Idle industrial capacity likely to grow further

The fall in manufacturing capacity utilisation over the past year casts further doubt over the Bank of Canada's expectation that the external sector can take over from households in driving economic growth. The reasons for manufacturing's troubles aren't easy to nail down, but they appear to stem from a lack of competitiveness in certain export industries. Accordingly, we still think that the Bank of Canada is too optimistic about the economic outlook.
