Booming housing construction still on uneven footing

The recent strength in housing starts, mostly multiples, reflects strong new housing sales from over a year ago. However, home sales are now softening and the recent tightening of mortgage insurance rules this month is likely to further slow housing demand, particularly among first-time buyers. Given the already high inventory of unsold housing units, we doubt this strength in new construction can be sustained over the longer term.
