September's consensus blowing 52,100 gain in employment seems at odds with the recent lacklustre pace of GDP growth. The increase in the unemployment rate, to 7.4%, from 7.3% in August, is more consistent with other labour market measures. This labour market slack is likely to increase further as economic growth slows, eventually forcing the Bank of Canada to quit talking about raising interest rates.
