January's merchandise trade data was heavily influenced by activity in the auto sector. Mixed export figures and stronger imports (revisions included) suggest that the first-quarter contribution from net exports to GDP growth might reverse the positive 5% contribution in the fourth quarter. As such, we still think that the economy is on track to expand by close to 2% annualised.
