The rise in the core inflation rate in April, to 2.2% from 2.1%, was slightly stronger than expected but still appears due to the past depreciation of the Canadian dollar. As the weakness in the economy takes over as the primary driver of inflation later this year, however, we expect core inflation to ease back to 1.5% before year-end.
