The wider-than-expected South African fiscal deficit projections announced in today’s budget are a result of measures to deal with the financial troubles of Eskom and other struggling state-owned companies. It looks like the underlying fiscal stance will be tighter than that proposed in the medium-term budget statement last October. This provides another reason to think the economic recovery will be sluggish.
