Kenya: interest rate hikes likely this year

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) kept interest rates on hold today but, given the country’s large current account deficit and the fact that inflation is likely to rise over the coming months, some monetary tightening remains likely over the course of 2014. We are pencilling in 100bp of hikes in the second half of the year, which would take the policy rate to 9.50%.
