South African inflation picked up slightly in March, to 4.0%, but we expect that a combination of energy prices hikes and a weak rand will increase inflationary pressures going forward. Headline inflation is likely to breach 5% by the end of the year, while core inflation is likely to head above 6%. As a result, it looks increasingly likely that the Reserve Bank will raise interest rates over the coming months.
