October’s flash PMIs provided further evidence that several of the major advanced economies are heading into recessions. The surveys suggest that activity was already contracting at the start of Q4. And apart from during the initial COVID outbreaks, new orders fell at their fastest rate since the financial crisis. At least the weakness of demand has helped to ease supply constraints and reduce price pressures somewhat.
