The gap between the average price of new and existing homes now stands at a six year low. But that fall is mainly a reflection of limitations in the available data. There is little evidence that the new-build premium itself is falling. Accordingly, the movements in the relative prices of new and existing homes should not prevent a decent recovery in housing starts over the next year or two.
