The Republicans opted to raise the debt ceiling temporarily because they believed it was politically expedient to link their demands for spending cuts to one of the many other potential budget flashpoints coming up. They are just picking their battles. The one thing we know is that there will be many more battles over fiscal policy, which could undermine the recovery.
