Despite impressive gains in equity prices, the recent rebound in gasoline prices and rising interest rates hit consumer confidence in July. The Conference Board measure dropped back modestly to 80.3, from 82.1, only partially reversing the sharp gain in June. Even after that decline, however, confidence points to a modest pick-up in third-quarter consumption growth.
