Consumers fight off pre-election jitters (Apr 10)

Consumer spending has continued to bounce back from the snow and VAT related weakness seen at the start of the year. And with consumer confidence holding up despite the looming fiscal squeeze, the consumer recovery could continue to gather pace for a little while longer. However, a number of factors will soon constrain spending, including the looming fiscal squeeze and a deterioration in the housing and labour markets. We still think that consumer spending will struggle to rise this year as a whole.
