The announcement that Saudi Arabia will remove its three-year blockade of Qatar will help to strengthen political ties in the Gulf, but the direct economic benefits from the détente are likely to be limited. Instead, Qatar’s (and Saudi Arabia’s) economic prospects will continue to hinge on the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rollout of vaccines.
