Algeria’s protests and the impact on the rest of MENA

Any economic fallout from the protests in Algeria will have a negligible impact on the rest of the MENA region. The greater risk stems from political contagion. Past experience suggests that governments in the Gulf may resort to fiscal stimulus to dampen potential unrest. Although this would provide a near-term boost to growth, it would leave their economies more exposed to a fresh fall in oil prices.
