The preliminary bilateral trade deal between Mexico and the US, announced yesterday, is a far cry from the radical overhaul of the two countries’ trading relationship that many had feared. Tighter rules of origin and new labour content requirements in the deal will probably hit some Mexican vehicle exporters, but the economic impact should be small. Another consequence is that the (albeit modest) rally in the peso reinforces our view that Banxico will loosen monetary policy next year.
