Fiscal populism setting Argentina up for a fall

Argentina’s public finances have deteriorated by more than meets the eye under Cristina Fernández. Increased monetisation and the transfer of resources from public institutions have prevented the deficit from blowing out despite a rapid acceleration of spending. Not only is this fuelling an already rampant inflation rate, but it is also eroding the capacity of the central bank to support the peso.
