The huge 2.8% m/m fall in Brazilian industrial production in December was caused by a collapse in capital goods production, which tends to be extremely volatile. Even so, the underlying picture remains that Brazil’s industrial sector is struggling. Output appears to have contracted over the final quarter of last year, perhaps shaving 0.2-0.3% off quarterly GDP.
