Brazil GDP (Q1)

Brazil’s economy contracted in Q1, but the decline was smaller than expected thanks to a large positive contribution from net exports. With the news from the real economy not quite as grim as had been expected, policymakers are likely to maintain their focus on tackling inflation. Today’s data probably tip the balance in favour of another 50bp hike in interest rates at next week’s COPOM meeting.
