On the yen again

The Bank of Japan’s apparently relaxed attitude to the strength of the yen can largely be explained by the fact that there is very little that the central bank can do about it anyway. The currency’s status as a safe haven is also, at least in part, a vote of confidence in Japan’s economic and financial strength. As it happens, though, we do not expect the yen’s recent gains against the dollar to be sustained.
