No respite in sight for Japan's manufacturers

It was perhaps refreshing that last week there was at least one occasion when news from Japan drove markets elsewhere, rather than vice versa. Unfortunately, that news was bad, namely the weakness of Japan’s exports in July. We expect this downbeat tone to carry over this week into the usual end-month rush of economic data, with the lowlights likely to include a disappointing report on industrial production in July and a further falls in the manufacturing PMI in August.
