The consensus is usually right to focus on the core measures of Japan’s CPI when looking at the prospects for a permanent end to deflation and the implications for monetary policy. Nonetheless, trends in all items inflation are still important when thinking about the near-term outlook for consumer spending. In that context, the return of inflation in October – even though it is only likely to be temporary – is another reason to be wary.
