The surge in the yen and recent weakness in the export-oriented manufacturing sector have raised concerns that Japan may already be sliding back into recession. In contrast, our view is that the near-term outlook is brighter than generally appreciated, even though GDP growth is likely to tail off sharply during the course of 2011.
