Looking back over the first half of the year, we have been right to be relatively bullish on the strength of the economic recovery in Japan. However, the yen has remained stronger and Japanese government bond (JGB) yields lower than we had anticipated, as demand for a safe haven from even bigger problems elsewhere has more than offset concerns about the awful state of the public finances in Japan itself.
