If the end-game for Japan’s public debt problem is direct financing of the budget deficit by the Bank of Japan, this could be a step towards a solution rather than the disaster that many assume. Inflation would be likely to rise, which is exactly what is needed to lift nominal GDP growth and lower the ratio of public debt to GDP.
