Tankan before and after the earthquake

The breakdown of the Bank of Japan’s Tankan survey of business conditions into pre- and post-earthquake responses showed that conditions were already expected to weaken before the disaster and are now expected to do so at a faster rate afterwards. However, monthly surveys such as the PMIs (the services index is due tomorrow) and the Economy Watchers Survey (due Friday) will provide more regular and useful assessments of the impact over time.
