Recovery already losing momentum

Japan’s rapid recovery in Q1 already appears to be losing momentum. The unemployment rate has risen again and retail spending fell for a second consecutive month in April. However, government reconstruction spending is likely to continue to support the economy even if other props (such as auto sales) weaken. We expect GDP will expand again in Q2, albeit at a slower pace than in Q1.
