The government is encouraging manufacturers to return production of components from their overseas subsidiaries to Japan. Given the large scale of production that is now located abroad, a major reshoring of the industry isn’t realistic. And even if firms did return a large chunk of production to Japan, that would not reduce supply chain dependencies much.
