Raising female participation in the labour force to the same rate as that for men could boost Japan’s GDP by as much as 13%. However, no advanced economy has achieved parity on this basis, and a more realistic target would be a 3% gain (spread over many years). What’s more, unpaid work, including managing a home and looking after children, may be under-recorded in GDP but clearly still contributes to wellbeing.
