Japanese trade took a sharp turn for the worse in March after the earthquake and tsunami disrupted
production and damaged infrastructure.
The trade surplus fell to its lowest level in two years as exports
dropped back and imports continued to flow into the country. It is unlikely exports will make a rapid
recovery due to the ongoing electricity shortages, but as manufacturers reopen their facilities, there
should be some rebound in April.
