Corporate Japan in good shape to weather global slowdown

The relative resilience of capital spending in the first quarter survey from the Ministry of Finance supports other evidence that corporate Japan is in much better shape than at similar stages in previous downturns. We continue to expect the economy to grow by 2% or so in 2008 as a whole, comfortably above consensus forecasts of around 1½% and little different from the 2.1% in 2007.
