The Bank of Japan (BoJ) left rates unchanged today but the accompanying policy statement was more cautious on the outlook. This is a positive step but the BoJ will probably stay reluctant to implement the further quantitative easing measures which are needed to defeat deflation. Nevertheless, the yen has probably overshot on the strong side and we expect some weakness by year-end.
