EPFR Global data for July and August suggest that ETF and mutual fund portfolio flows into emerging markets (EMs) may have remained negative in Q3 2013 for the second quarter running amid ongoing concerns about the US Fed’s monetary policy. However, separate daily data from six countries in Emerging Asia show that, in this region at least, international investors have rediscovered their appetite for equities in September. This may partly explain why the underperformance of EM equities vis-à-vis developed market equities has shown tentative signs of abating recently.
