Despite the criticisms levelled at them over the past year, central banks are not likely to be stripped of their independence anytime soon, or have their mandates radically changed. Politicians who were most critical in opposition have been quiet on the subject in office. Investors should therefore assume that monetary policy will continue to be set in order to achieve central banks’ existing mandates.
