July was a tough month for energy commodities with oil and coal prices slumping again as worries about demand, prompted by the drop in the Chinese equity market, and signs of improving supply weighed on sentiment. Indeed, we have been flagging up exactly these risks for some time now. Whilst natural gas prices in the US held up, prices in Asia continued to tumble as lower oil prices feed through into index-linked contracts.
