While manufacturing in Emerging Europe does not seem to have collapsed to the same extent as in Western Europe, August’s PMIs remain at levels consistent with a recession in industry in Poland and the Czech Republic and strengthen the case for policy stimulus in both countries over the coming months. Manufacturers in Turkey and Russia appear to be faring a little better, although the best that can be said is that output is stagnating rather than falling.
