We do not expect Emerging Europe to suffer a major banking crisis despite the recent collapse of major Western institutions such as Bear Stearns and Northern Rock. But while there is scope for the banking sector to expand strongly over the medium-term, a moderation in credit growth remains key to a rebalancing the economies of the Baltics and the Balkans over the next year or so.
