The announcement that China’s government will place more emphasis on food safety and quality, rather than just quantity, might suggest that the country will have to import significantly more grain. However, the statement represents more of a subtle shift in priorities than an abrupt change. We are not therefore expecting China’s imports to rise substantially more than they otherwise would have done.
